日々の生活に高級感を 漆の日特集
Do you know what day 11/13 is? It's actually Lacquer Day! Not just on November 13th, but November is also known as Lacquer Use Month. Lacquerware has an image of being very luxurious, right? It's true that there are expensive lacquerware products, but there are also some that are reasonably priced and easy to buy! In this column, I would like to introduce you to lacquer!

What is lacquer in the first place?

Some people may be wondering what lacquer is, to begin with. Lacquer is the sap extracted from the lacquer tree, and this sap is a natural paint that is commonly called lacquer. This lacquer has long been used as a paint for tableware, furniture, etc. Lacquer is resistant to heat and oil, and also has insect repellent properties, making it perfect for use as a paint for tableware and furniture. When you think of lacquer, you probably think of beautiful black or vermilion, but these colors are achieved by mixing pigments into natural lacquer. Other traditional lacquer colors include yellow and blue (green), also known as yellow lacquer and blue lacquer. Recently, technological advances have made it possible to create pigments of various colors, and by mixing lacquer with these pigments, it is now possible to create a variety of colors while maintaining the transparency that is unique to lacquer.

Lacquer from around the world

There are many crafts around the world that use lacquer. Not only lacquerware, but it is also used as a paint in paintings. The traditional uses of lacquer all developed in Asia, where lacquer is harvested. This shows how deeply rooted lacquer has been in human culture since ancient times.
