Description
The one-eyed skull makes a striking statement. This silver netsuke features Murakami Motoyoshi, the leader of the Noshima Murakami Navy.
The Murakami Navy was a group of pirates who wielded great power in the Seto Inland Sea from the Northern and Southern Courts period through the Muromachi and Sengoku periods. This design features a skull, the symbol of piracy, as well as Murakami Motoyoshi, the leader of Japan's largest pirate group. The design is adorned with a gold-plated cloth eye belt resembling the Murakami Navy's flag. Above the head, the large Murakami clan crest, a circle with upper characters, shines proudly. Motoyoshi was given the name Motonari Mori, who bestowed a character on him. Also note the other family crest discreetly engraved on the back. This piece is part of a series featuring his younger brother, Kagechika, who also led the navy, and we recommend wearing them as a set or as a pair.
