[What is Iga Kumihimo?]
The origins of Iga braids are ancient, and are said to date back to before the Nara period. In the Heian period, elaborate braids began to be used for Buddhist altars and Shinto ritual implements. During the era of the samurai class, a large amount of braids for armor and swords were produced, and a braiding culture centered on military equipment was born. After the sword ban was issued and samurai society collapsed, the traditional braiding techniques of the Edo period became popular for the obi-jime and haori cords that are indispensable for Japanese clothing, and nowadays straps and glass cords are also made and are gaining popularity.
