Plum blossoms bloom in early spring, so why June? Apparently, it's named after a Muromachi period event, when the emperor offered plum blossoms at the Aoi Festival at Kamo Shrine in Kyoto, a ritual to pray for a bountiful harvest. Suddenly, thunder roared, and a torrential downpour ended the drought, leading to the rain being called "rainy season." The Ichi offers many merchandise featuring plum blossoms, a flower that has long been beloved as a symbol of Japan.
