How do I care for my obi?

After enjoying your yukata (obi and geta) to your heart's content, be sure to take good care of them and store them carefully for next year. Here we will introduce how to wash, care for, and store your obi. Please refer to this.

・Points to note when caring for your obi

Note: Always check the washing instructions. Make sure to check in advance whether the item can be washed or not, and whether the color fades easily or not. Generally, you should avoid washing your yukata obi frequently to prevent it from losing its shape or fraying. If the obi is made of polyester or cotton-linen, place it in a laundry net and wash it in the washing machine on a gentle setting. Obi made with pure silk, vibrant threads, gold threads, or rayon cannot be washed at home. It is best to have them dry cleaned. If there is no noticeable dirt, it is fine to clean it once every few years. To ensure you can enjoy it again next season, be sure to pay close attention to the materials and labels.

・Obi care

First, try quickly wiping off any dirt from the obi with a dry towel. It loses its shape easily, so unless there is noticeable dirt, you don't need to wash it every time. When washing an obi made of polyester or cotton-linen, use the "hand wash" cycle and spin for a short time. Obi with gold thread or other decorative details should not be washed. They should be sent to the dry cleaners. Once the washing is complete, pat the garment with your hands to remove any wrinkles, then hang it up to dry in a well-ventilated area. When drying your obi, be careful not to use clothespins to hold it in place, as this can leave marks. Use a flat hanger to dry the garment flat. When ironing, use a press cloth and apply a dry iron to the wrinkled areas. Hang it on a hanger to dry and let it cool down completely.

・How to fold and store an obi

There is no problem if you fold it, but creases in the obi will not look good, so it is ideal to roll it up if possible. It may also be a good idea to remember that storing it rolled up and upright will help prevent wrinkles. Fold them differently depending on where you're storing them, and try not to stack them too much to avoid creases. It might be a good idea to put a desiccant or something inside so that you can use it in good condition next season. Do not store it in a humid place. Avoid placing heavy objects on it, as this may cause it to lose its shape or become wrinkled.
